In attempting to help them I quickly realized that the traditional procedures that plastic surgeons learned and performed were inadequate and led to less than satisfactory results and patient disappointment. These patients were seeking a return of their bodies back to normal. This led to a situation where massive weight loss patients, which at the time was an unusual group of patients to encounter in a plastic surgeon’s career, started to frequent my practice. At the time I joined the faculty of plastic surgery at the University of Iowa, bariatric surgery was fairly limited to the Midwest, mostly Iowa and Minnesota. The University of Iowa happens to be the birthplace of bariatric surgery, which is surgery that is performed by general surgeons to reduce obese patients’ weight. Thus I decided to go back and retrain in all of plastic surgery by completing a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial.Īfter completing my second residency, I started my working career in plastic surgery at the University of Iowa which was a life and career altering event. I realized during that time that I have true passion for the entire specialty of plastic surgery. Because I trained originally in ENT and received special training in rhinoplasty, I have special interest and expertise in rhinoplasty.Īt this stage of my career I thought that I would end up practicing facial plastic surgery so I joined a private practice in the Beverly Hills area for 2 years. I then moved back to the Southern California area where I completed a fellowship in facial plastic surgery, mostly concentrated on rhinoplasty or nasal reshaping surgery, at the University of California Irvine. I then did another one-year research fellowship and then completed an ENT residency at Vanderbilt University. Subsequently I received my medical degree from Georgetown School of Medicine in Washington DC and then spent two years in general surgery training at UCLA with another two years of research at the same institution.
